Annette Handley Chandler, a MoveOn member in New York, started a petition to House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. Jason Chaffetz, calling for him to launch a probe into Trump’s finances.
The petition reached its 75,000 signature goal Thursday morning, and it states that President-elect Donald Trump’s businesses and finances need to be investigated in order to “avoid entanglements and possible conflicts of interest.”
In an email sent out advertising the petition Annette Handley Chandler wrote the following:
It is in the interest of the citizens of the United States to know the entanglements and potential conflicts of interest that Donald J. Trump’s businesses and investments have with his job as our president. We want to make sure that presidential decisions are made in the best interest of our country and its citizens, not in the interest of Mr. Trump’s businesses.
She states that “Rep. Elijah Cummings and 17 fellow members of the House of Representatives already called on Rep. Chaffetz to use his position as chair of the House Oversight Committee to pursue this investigation.”
She then goes on to say Rep. Chaffetz needs to “follow through on his commitment to hold the next president accountable regardless of party” after he said in an interview with The Daily Caller that it is his panel’s ‘job and responsibility … to oversee all expenditures by the executive branch, no matter who the president is.’”
This petition is still calling for action to be taken, even after Donald Trump announced on Wednesday in a series of tweets and Facebook posts that he would be leaving his businesses to focus on the White House.
“While I am not mandated to do this under the law, I feel it is visually important, as President, to in no way have a conflict of interest with my various businesses. Hence, legal documents are being crafted which take me completely out of business operations. The Presidency is a far more important task!” Trump wrote.
