A social justice student group erected two fences on either side of their John Carroll University’s campus, as a part of a senior project, one by the library and one in front of the student center. Both “walls” were approved by the school in advance. It was intended to highlight information about the country’s immigration policies, but it turned into a “mock” border wall that made Trump fans angry.
Students said their walls were vandalized by Trump supporters, who had put up their own signs, and chalked Trump messages all over campus.
Tuesday evening it almost came to blows, with pro-Trump students on one side, and the social justice students and Latino groups on the other. Several of the social justice team even slept by the wall at night to prevent anyone from coming to vandalize it.
John Carroll University released the following statement:
“As an academic community, John Carroll University is committed to creating an environment in which individuals and groups have the ability to express different points of view. At the same time, the University requires expression of views to be shared in a respectful manner that does not threaten the safety or well-being of a person or property. We are reviewing concerns raised by individual students regarding the display and will respond as appropriate.”
