During a White House press briefing on Tuesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer attempted to magnify how serious the sarin gas attack in Syria was and to point out the atrocities of Syrian President Bashar Assad and his Russian allies but stepped in a river of quicksand during and while clarifying his remarks.

“We did not use chemical weapons in World War II. You had someone as despicable as Hitler who did not even sink to using chemical weapons,” Spicer said. “If you are Russia, ask yourself, is this a country and regime that you want to align yourself with?”

When asked by a reporter for clarification, Spicer added, “When it comes to sarin gas, [Hitler] was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing.”

When one of the scribes pointed out that Hitler did in fact use gas to kill (in reference to the Jews murdered during the Holocaust), Spicer clarified his earlier remark but stumbled once again.

“I understand your point. Thank you. I appreciate that. He brought them into the Holocaust centers, I understand that,” Spicer said. “I was saying in the way that Assad used them where he went into town, dropped them into the middle of town. I appreciate the clarification. That was not the intent.”

Using the current celebration of Passover as a backdrop, Democratic strategist David Axelrod took to Twitter to mock Spicer with, “Safe bet @PressSec suggestion that Hitler didn’t use chemical weapons on his own people will be topic at many Seder dinners tonight. #WHAT?” and “One of the basic rules of politics: Hitler comparisons always end badly. Assad’s a monster; Hitler in category by himself.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took it a step further and basically demanded Spicer’s sacking. “Sean Spicer must be fired, and the President must immediately disavow his spokesman’s statements. Either he is speaking for the president, or the president should have known better than to hire him,” she said in a statement.

CNN’s Jake Tapper wasted no time in raking Spicer over the coals and pointed out that he needs to visit the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC due to Spicer referring to the concentration camps as “Holocaust centers.”
