Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates claims she was denied the opportunity to testify in a hearing on Russian relations with the Trump administration.
According to claims made by The Washington Post, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes denied Yates the chance to give her testimony.
Before Trump fired Yates as the acting attorney general and Attorney General Jeff Sessions took over the role, Yates submitted a notice to officials about ex-national security adviser Michael Flynn’s contacts with a Russian ambassador.
Yates had planned to give her testimony up until Justice Department officials informed Yates’ lawyer, David O’Neill, that she would need consent from the White House to speak openly about her point of view on the issue.
Soon thereafter, according to the Post, Nunes denied the request because Yates and former CIA Director John Brennan’s testimonies of events were expected to conflict with recent comments from White House staff.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer attacked the Post’s claims, calling them “entirely false,” and said the White House welcomes the idea of Yates testifying before a committee:
“The White House has taken no action to prevent Sally Yates from testifying and the Department of Justice specifically told her that it would not stop her, and to suggest otherwise is completely irresponsible. I hope she testifies. I look forward to it. We encouraged them to go ahead.”
