Johnny Boyega, who stars as Finn in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” got to do what every successful child dreams of doing for his parents: he bought them a home.
“I mean, that’s the way to do it,” Boyega told Entertainment Tonight when asked about what he’s done with his big payday. “You know, I also think that’s giving back to my king and queen. So, that’s what I did.”
The 25-year-old has long credited his parents, Samson and Abigail Boyega, for his success, and discussed to GQ how close he is to them. They were the model couple the Star Wars star had in mind when he turned to Robert Downey Jr. for advice on avoiding the disastrous relationships Hollywood has produced over the years.
“My mom and dad have been together 25 years, so that’s the system I will follow,” he said. The couple stayed together throughout the process of immigrating to South London, after meeting in their home country of Nigeria.
The actor’s own love life changed the day he was cast in the starring role, but not always as expected. He recounts a humorous story about how his success actually got him dumped. After following through on relationship advice given to him by fellow actor Orlando Bloom on “The Graham Norton Show,” it blew up in his face.
“I know Orlando, and he gave me some advice before ‘Star Wars 7’ came out,” he shared. “His advice was, ‘Try and secure the love of your life before this happens.’ And, I did. She didn’t know what I did until we were driving through Times Square, and she goes, ‘What do you do for a living?'”
“I looked up and I go, ‘That,'” Boyega answered, pointing to a giant billboard of himself holding a light saber. “I blocked her on my phone,” he said. “That picture… just kind of affected her.”
Despite that initial weirdness, it has been an upward trend for Boyega in Hollywood, who admitted he is still awestruck by what he gets to experience.
“It’s strange because you’ve been working towards the success for so long and [to] see it manifest, it’s a huge blessing,” he said. “But, at the [same] time, [it’s] a huge responsibility, ‘cause not everybody gets this opportunity.”
