Starbucks pushes new ‘bipartisan’ coffee

Starbucks and Boston-based startup app ‘Hi From the Other Side’ have teamed up to promote a bipartisan political agenda by giving away free cups of coffee.

Customers who sign up on the new app through Facebook are paired up with an individual who shares differing political views from their own. The goal is to foster a cordial discussion about differences between the two ideologically-opposed participants.

The Hi From the Other Side website states its mission is to pair up “nice people across the political divide to talk like neighbors … not to convince, but to understand” and to enable “people who really want to engage in a civil conversation.”

When a participant signs up, they receive a Starbucks e-gift card. The purpose of the gift card is to make sure participants “show up and work together to unlock the gift card!”

Starbucks has engaged in political endeavors before, such as the 2015 “Race Together” campaign and the recent announcement that it will hire 10,000 refugees in 75 different countries this year.
