When he was the chief executive of ExxonMobil, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson often had dealings with the Russian government on various business projects and was once awarded the prestigious Order of Friendship by Moscow.

Now that he’s holding a government position –to the chagrin of Democrats who have been critical of his amicable relationship with Russia and his lack of political experience– CNN wants to see any “communications between ExxonMobil CEO/Chairman Rex Tillerson and officials at the State Department relating to Russia and US policy toward Russia.”

To that end, CNN filed a Freedom of Information Act request. However, the State Department has allegedly turned down the request.

According to a Friday report from CNN, the State Department said that they did locate one relevant document but decided that “it must be withheld in full” out of “a need to protect internal deliberations.”

As a result, CNN has filed an appeal implicate yet another Trump official in what the president has termed a political “witch hunt.”
