A quality of life study conducted by the website 24/7 Wall Street formulated a list of the 50 worst cities to live in America, and some commonly referenced shanty towns headline it.

The 50 worst cities list was not kind to the state of Michigan, which contributed two cities to the top 10, and is home to the number one worst city to live in the US: Detroit.

Utilizing a type of factorial analysis, researchers at 24/7 Wall Street graded the 550 US cities identified in the 2015 census as having a populations greater than 65,000. Factors were assembled into 9 categories: crime, economy, demography, education, environment, health, housing, infrastructure, and leisure. Individual factors include things such as, unemployment rate which would fall in the category of economy, or property prices, which would fall under housing. Similarly, two factors under health could be air quality and death rate.

Scandal ravaged Flint, Michigan couldn’t be kept out of the top 10, as they still deal with the fallout from their contaminated water crisis. Birmingham, Alabama came in second with a poverty rate of almost 30 percent. Representing California is the city of Merced at number 9 and from the northeast is Hartford, Connecticut at number 8 with some of the highest tax rates in the country.
