Study reveals which demographic are best tippers

A new survey released Monday revealed that the best tippers at restaurants are typically Republican males from the Northeast, who normally give the expected 20 percent tip when dining out.

Among the worst tippers, according to the study, are Democrats from the South (15 percent) and women (16 percent).

The study, conducted by Creditcards.com through Princeton Survey Research Associates International, also revealed that one in five customers at sit-down restaurants don’t leave any tip at all, and almost one third of people never tip their hotel housekeeper.

According to Matt Schulz, a senior analyst at Creditcards.com, Republicans are definitely better tippers than Democrats, as 59 percent of Republicans tip more than 15 percent, while only 46 percent of Democrats give that amount.

The best tippers, who all leave a 20 percent tip, are summarized in the study as follows:

  • Men.
  • Republicans.
  • Northeasterners.
  • Baby boomers.
  • Anyone who tips with a credit or debit card.

Women are more likely than men to tip their hair stylists, baristas and hotel housekeepers.

The telephone poll of 1,002 adults was conducted June 22-25, 2017.
