A new survey conducted by marketing research firm YouGov found that almost half of American adults believe having sex with robots will become mainstream in the next 50 years.
While many believe the trend will be popular in the future, men are far more willing to admit they’d consider having sex with a robot than women. Of the 1,146 adults–ages 18 and up– questioned in the survey, only 9 percent of women said they’d consider using a sex robot, as opposed to 24 percent of men.
For both men and women, the robot needs to be almost indistinguishable from a human; 52 percent said the robot would need to be identical to a human for them to consider hooking up with it.
Still, most Americans don’t think a robot romp would count as traditional sex. According to the study, one in three American adults believes getting down with a robot is more along the lines of masturbation than sex.
And when it comes to cheating, poll recipients were almost perfectly divided. When asked if hooking up with a sex robot while in an exclusive relationship could be classified as cheating, 32 percent said it would be unfaithful and 33 percent said it would not.
While robots are starting to catch steam, the sex doll industry has been around for a while. Dolls are being manufactured in the USA, with one vendor in California selling full body sex dolls for $15,000. The body is $7,000, the custom head is $8,000. The models are completely customized, from choosing skin tone to body part sizes, and the look and feel of the dolls are lifelike.
Nonetheless, the receptiveness of American adults to the idea of a sex robot should be encouraging to industry executives as they plan the rolling out of their products.
