A video of a female student wearing a hijab while “boxing” with a male white student in the hallway of Washburn High School in Minneapolis has turned out to be a fake.
The video, complete with the title, “Welcome to Washburn”, was posted Friday night on Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat, showed a female wearing the Muslim garment fighting with a white male student who had allegedly just pulled on her hijab.
The video wound up going viral with 6.5 million views and over 161,000 shares, as well as 29,000 comments. Many of the comments were in favor of the girl for defending herself.
Washburn High School spokesman, Dirk Tedmon, said that on Saturday, school officials had interviewed the families of the students involved and determined that it was a “play fight” intended to be a joke.
According to Tedmon, “School safety and security staff confirmed the alleged incident never happened. By the time it was discovered to be a hoax, the video had gone viral.”
Tedmon refused to comment on whether the students involved would face disciplinary actions, citing privacy issues.
Tedmon did state, “We want to make sure our families know the school community works continually to keep our buildings safe,” adding that a learning environment that is “culturally sensitive to all our students is a priority.”
