Survey reveals McCain support higher among Dems than GOP

A new Gallup poll notes that a rare phenomenon has occurred in which a politician has received better ratings from supporters of an opposition party than from those of his own party’s base.

After Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain voted against the GOP’s efforts to repeal Obamacare, his favorability rating has shot up to 58 percent – with the majority of it among Democrats.

The Gallup poll, conducted August 2-6, was taken soon after McCain joined forces with 46 Democrats, two Republicans, and two Independents to sink a last-ditch effort by the GOP to repeal Obamacare.

As a result, McCain now has a whopping 71 percent approval rating with Democrats, a 22-point increase from their view of him in August 2015.

In comparison, McCain’s approval among Republicans has plunged by 10 points over the past two years, from 61 percent in August 2015 to 51 percent in the latest poll.

Gallup further reported:

“Gallup has documented only one other case in which a politician had significantly higher ratings from the opposition party than from his own party. McCain’s friend and former Senate colleague, Democrat Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, had higher ratings among Republicans than Democrats in two 2006 polls.

“Lieberman’s consistent support for the Iraq War was at odds with most elected Democrats’ views, and his pro-war positions caused Democratic identifiers to sour on him while Republicans came to view him positively. By July 2006, when the incumbent Lieberman was engaged in a spirited primary campaign he ultimately lost, Republicans rated Lieberman better than Democrats did.”

McCain, who has been a vocal critic of President Trump, further denigrated the president in a recent interview with The New York Times when he claimed that the chances of the Republican Party supporting Trump for re-election in 2020 is uncertain.

“They see weakness in this president,” McCain told the Times, adding, “Look, it’s not a nice business we’re in.”

McCain’s approval among Democrats is now skyrocketing.
