Suspect emerges in Jewish community center threats

In an attempt to vilify his former girlfriend, a jilted man staged at least eight of the numerous threats perpetrated against Jewish community centers nationwide, in addition to a bomb threat at New York’s Anti-Defamation League.

Federal officials reported Friday that Juan Thompson was arrested in St. Louis and charged with cyberstalking. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Missouri on Friday afternoon.

A federal complaint revealed that Thompson dated the woman until last summer when their relationship ended. The day following their breakup, her boss received an email allegedly from a national news organization claiming that she had been pulled over for drunken driving.

The harassment continued with the Anti-Defamation League receiving an email on Feb. 21 asserting that the woman was responsible for the bomb threats to Jewish community centers and that more would follow the next day.

On Feb. 22, the organization received a bomb threat via telephone.

Thompson also attached blame to his ex-girlfriend for the placement of a bomb in a Jewish center in Dallas. In an email to a center in San Diego, he claimed that she wanted to “kill as many Jews asap.”

Federal officials continue to investigate 122 phoned-in bomb threats to nearly 100 Jewish centers, including school, child care, and similar facilities in 36 states.
