Target has joined the transgender bathroom controversy, making sure everyone knows they stand on the side of “INCLUSIVITY.”
Target has announced that their customers and employees are welcome to use any bathroom or changing room they wish, based on the gender they “identify” with. The Minneapolis-based retailer, which has 1,793 stores in the U.S., released a statement on Tuesday confirming its policy:
[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.
We believe that everyone—every team member, every guest, and every community—deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally. Consistent with this belief, Target supports the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals, and opposes action that enables discrimination.
In our stores, we demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive experience in many ways. Most relevant for the conversations currently underway, we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target. [/pullquote]

From the looks of the Facebook comments following their announcement, many Target customers no longer feel welcome nor protected, and will now be taking their business elsewhere:
[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] There is nothing that I buy at Target that I can’t buy elsewhere. So long. Farewell.
I’ve about had it with Target playing politics. I’m opting out on shopping and purging any mutual funds with an interest in Target.
It’s too bad that Target had to make such a drastic decision so as to accommodate .03% of our population. I, and others I’m sure, will no longer feel welcomed or respected at Target because of this decision, and will no longer receive my money or support. Goodbye, Target.
You are willing to make 99.7% of the population uncomfortable to cater to the .3% who are transgender? I am done shopping with you. [/pullquote]
