Teacher arrested for having unprotected sex with student

A Floridan English teacher was arrested Friday for having consensual, unprotected sex with a 17-year-old male student, police said.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reports that Caroline Lawson, 29, a teacher at Earl J. Lenard High School in Ruskin was arrested two days after she allegedly had unprotected sex with her male student at her apartment in Tampa on Wednesday. She’s charged with two counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

The arrest affidavit says that Lawson texted a third party following the sexual act stating: “I cheated on jameson… with a student.”

The third-party asked: “When you say cheated, do you mean slept with?”

Lawson allegedly replied: “Yes.”

Authorities questioned the student on Thursday, FOX13 reported. He confirmed the encounter, which included intercourse with his high school English teacher, Lawson. He was reportedly able to verify Lawson’s name and age to authorities.

Detectives also met with Lawson on Thursday. She declined to provide a statement, but did note the text messages she sent to the third party, they said.

There were no previous complaints on Lawson’s file when she was hired in August 2014, according to Hillsborough County Public Schools. In a statement, the district said, “We are deeply disappointed by these charges. The safety of our students is our top priority. We are working with law enforcement as they investigate. This employee has resigned her position with the district.”

“We contacted all of the parents at Lennard High School, the Principal sent out a call this morning to all parents to let them know about the charges and make them aware that we are involved in the investigation,” said Hillsborough County Public Schools Spokesperson, Tanya Arja.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Larry McKinnon also commented about the alleged encounter, saying, “We condemn it, I am sure her co-workers condemn it, and we’re certainly going to be very proactive and aggressive on prosecuting this case and trying to determine if there are other victims or not.”
