Teacher who compared Trump MAGA shirts to Nazi paraphernalia removed

In a video that went viral, Georgia teacher Lyn Orletsky told her math students that they weren’t allowed to wear “Make America Great Again” T-shirts. Her reasoning? The slogan-adorned attire is like Nazi paraphernalia, in her opinion.

Following the release of the video, Orletsky will no longer be teaching in that classroom.

Orletsky, who was teaching at River Ridge High School in Cherokee County, told two students who were sporting the Trump-slogan shirts that they couldn’t wear them in her classroom.

“Just like you cannot wear a swastika to school… you cannot wear ‘Make America Great Again’ like that,” she said, in video footage obtained by Turning Point News.

Orletsky asked the students to turn their shirts inside out for the remainder of the class.

The Cherokee County School District quickly released an apology and said that the students were not in any trouble.

“Her actions were wrong, as the ‘Make America Great Again’ shirts worn by the students are not a violation of our school district dress code,” County spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby said at the time.

“This type of ignorance should not be tolerated in our community and goes against the ethics that we as Americans come to expect,” stated a Change.org petition, which had 930 signatures as of Wednesday afternoon.

River Ridge High School Principal Darrell Herring sent the parents of Orletsky’s students a letter Friday, announcing that, “effective immediately,” she was no longer teaching at the school and that the school had already assigned a substitute teacher. Herring said they would continue to search for a new, permanent math teacher.

The school system would not say if Orletsky was fired, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We can’t discuss ongoing administrative investigations or disciplinary action,” a statement said. “When a teacher resigns or is recommended by the Superintendent for termination, it is added to a School Board meeting agenda, which is a public record. The agenda can be amended at any time.”
