Teachers Demand GOP Senator Not Vote on DeVos Confirmation

INDIANA — Teachers and professors staged a sit-in protest outside Sen. Todd Young’s office on Thursday in opposition to the possible confirmation of President Trump’s pick for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos.

The protesters believe Young should recuse himself from voting on DeVos’ confirmation hearing due to the nominee donating $48,000 to Young’s campaign last year. The teachers cite this as a conflict of interest.

According to staffers working for Young, the senator does not plan to sit out on the vote for DeVos.  The staffers reference other senators who have received donations from previous cabinet picks, like Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana who grabbed $5,000 in donations from Penny Pritzker. Donnelly later voted in favor of Pritzker after Obama nominated her for the position of Secretary of Commerce.

As a side note of interest, Sen. Donnelly plans on voting against DeVos.
