In just a few months, one-in-six teachers have left the Swedish city of Malmö, while the number of school children in the area is expected to rise by nearly 42% in the next 10 years.
The population of the city has grown by a massive 50% in the past 20 years. This is largely in part due to the mass migration the city has experienced.
As the resident size continues to grow, the population of school age children is projected to surge from 31,000 to 44,000 in the next decade.
Currently Malmö’s population sits at 317,000.
According to The Guardian, approximately 43% of that number has a foreign background and 40,000 of those with a foreign background are Iraqi immigrants and their descendants.
The Sydsvenskan reported that 17% of school teachers have left the school system between January and October of this year.
They also stated that one in three teachers in the city are not fully qualified.
The University of Malmö is now offering courses to teachers called “Learning and Teaching in Multicultural Schools.” Education officials are hoping that the classes will help teachers to cope with the rapid changes due to the increasing “diversity.”
Breitbart reported that the classes will offer teachers:
“Strategies and methods for teaching/learning in multiethnic and multilingual settings” and cover “migration and national and minority group identity” and “world philosophies, religions, ideologies and value systems in the Swedish classroom.”
The idea behind creating a culture of understanding is to aid teachers and students in better communication. Last year, a school was closed due to widespread violence and criminality. A spokesman for the city told media: “Violence, threats and verbal abuse.”
The ever changing culture issue is not limited to only education as it was reported that last year 11% from all professions within the public sector left their workplace in the town.
The police force has been particularly affected by the situation.
