Two people are in custody after the horrendous sexual assault of a 1-year-old girl was discovered.
On New Year’s Eve, 22-year-old, Crystal Herrera called 911 stating that her 1-year-old relative had wandered out of the house in the middle of the night and was attacked by dogs.
After deputies and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to a home in South Bexar County, they examined the child and swiftly determined that the life-threatening injuries she sustained were consistent with sexual assault.
They also realized that she had suffered stab wounds to her upper body and private parts that were “non accidental.”
As authorities spoke to Herrera and her boyfriend, Isaac Andrew Cardenas, they determined that not only were their stories different from one another, but that they didn’t match the baby’s injuries.
When Bexar County Animal Control was sent out to pick up the dogs, they stated that the canines showed no signs of being aggressive.
Herrera was arrested on a charge of injury to a child by omission. Cardenas, 23, was arrested and charged with super aggravated sexual assault.
The baby was transported to University Hospital, and was considered in stable condition on Tuesday.
During his first news conference since being sworn in, Bexar County Sheriff, Javier Salazar said,” I can’t even begin to describe to you the level of depravity that went into this crime. It’s a horrendous case.”
“I’ve got seasoned detectives and emergency room personnel that have all agreed that this is one of the worst cases they’ve seen.”
“This is one of those cases, I’ll be honest with you, it’s something that I haven’t even seen the pictures, I don’t want to see the pictures,” Salazar said. “It’s been described to me and just imagining it is enough to chill any of us.”
Salazar said that authorities are investigating for any history of abuse of the baby, who is set to be placed with Child Protective Services.
“You can’t even imagine what would possess somebody to do something like this to anyone, much less an innocent child that’s totally defenseless,” Salazar continued.
“A child this small to suffer these types of injuries … she’s going to carry this with her for the rest of her life, physically, emotionally, and also as a family,” he said. “It’s a heartbreaking case.”
According to The New York Post, Cardenas’ charge is a capital felony with a minimum 20-year sentence. His bond was set at $300,000.
