Odds are weighing in Trump’s favor — he should win the GOP nomination. Lets assume he gets it. On the other ticket will be Hillary Clinton. Both candidates have huge unfavorable ratings; both of them are “older” candidates. Put it all together and both will be pressured to pick young, likable running mates.
For Clinton, the choice will be easy. She needs to pick a young man with a Hispanic name so that she cements in the liberal-leaning Latino vote. Thus, she will probably pick Julio Castro — an up and coming star in the Democratic party who served as Mayor of San Antonio, Texas before being appointed to Obama’s team. Mr. Castro currently serves as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He is also the son of the woman who heads the pro-amnesty group, La Razza.
If Clinton picks Castro, there will be many in the GOP who will tell Trump he too needs to pick a Latino.
Months ago, I suggested Trump pick the Governor of New Mexico, Suzanne Martinez. She was my pick because she is female, and a Latino. If Trump picked her he could check off two boxes where he is vulnerable. Plus, she comes with the political prowess Trump does not possess.
The problem is Martinez is anti-Trump. She has made negative remarks about Trump, and she endorsed Senator Marco Rubio prior to his dropping out. Plus, the more I’ve thought about her as VP the more I didn’t like the idea.
Trump has turned the political process on its head — he has unmasked the corruption and the insider mindset. Martinez is a politician who rubs elbows with the elitists. Trump must stay the course — no more politicians!
The American people have supported Trump for many reasons, but I think the biggest reason of all is because he is an outsider. We love the idea of having DC turned upside down by a bulldog like Trump — a man who used his own money to run for office and thus, he owes no favors to any special interest groups.
Many of us conservatives have overlooked Trump’s liberal past because of his hawkish positions on immigration.
Trump has promised us he will ban all Muslims until immigration officials can better screen new immigrants.
He has promised the mass deportation of all illegal aliens and he will secure the border with a huge wall.
We believe he will keep his promises! As hard as it is to do at times, we put ourselves out on the ledge for him. We defend his candidacy even if it means we go to war with our friends, family and co-workers who are part of the NeverTrump movement.
That said, Trump must never ever show signs of backing off these promises. If he shows signs of swinging left, or coming off his hard stance on immigration, then people like me will fade away. In short, voters will sit on the sidelines (see short video clip at below).
Now put it all together.
The single worst thing Trump can do is pick Senator Marco Rubio as his running mate.
There will be pressure on him to do so from the GOP elite who wanted Rubio from day one. If Hillary picks Castro, the GOP will be whispering in Trump’s ear that he too needs a Latino, and so they will push for Rubio. They will sell Trump on Rubio’s ability to outdebate Castro.
Rubio is a flip-flopper who cannot be trusted. Never forget the Gang of 8 Bill, and how he went pro-amnesty while breaking bread with Democrats.
Trump needs to be smart. There is no way he is going to win the Latino vote as a Republican. For example, Reagan granted amnesty in 1986 but the Latinos did not reward George Bush Sr with the Latino vote. Fact is, Latinos voted for the Democrat.
The way Trump wins the White House is by getting voters to come off the sidelines. That’s what he has done to date and he must stick to that strategy. He’s a businessman. He should know what all business people know… it can take up to a year to earn a customer’s trust, but it merely takes a minute to lose it.
If Trump selects Rubio, he will lose millions of people.
