Besides the terrorist watch list, the FBI also maintains another list in the form of the criminal records database. As of June 24, if you’re a law-abiding legal gun owner living in the state of Hawaii, you have been added to that list.

From Reuters:

Hawaii’s governor signed a bill making it the first state to place its residents who own firearms in a federal criminal record database and monitor them for possible wrongdoing anywhere in the country, his office said.

The move by gun control proponents in the liberal state represents an effort to institute some limits on firearms in the face of a bitter national debate over guns that this week saw Democratic lawmakers stage a sit-in at the U.S. House of Representatives.

“This is about our community’s safety and responsible gun ownership,” Gov. David Ige in a statement. “This system will better enable our law enforcement agencies to ensure the security of all Hawaii residents and visitors to our islands.” Ige and the majority of the Hawaii state legislators are Democrats, and this major piece of legislation follows after House Democrats staged a sit-in to protest their displeasure with a failed gun control bill.
The NRA expressed its displeasure with the new state law tweeting: “Exercising constitutional rights in #Hawaii now gets you entered into a federal watchlist, er, database.”
