Several reporters covering Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s visit to Russia asserted that he abandoned his press pool to attend an unscheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Wednesday.

As late as Monday, Moscow contended that Putin would not be meeting with Tillerson during his official visit to the country.
The meeting between Tillerson and Putin took place in the midst of rising tension between the United States and Russia regarding the ongoing conflict in Syria.
Russia accused the Trump administration of violating international law after the U.S. launched a strike on a Syrian airfield last Thursday.
The U.S. has urged Russia to cease their support of Bashar Assad, the Syrian President who is believed to have been responsible for last week’s chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians.
