Secretary of State Rex Tillerson joined Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in a press conference in Moscow Monday in which Tillerson claimed that U.S.-Russia relations have hit a “low point.”

Tillerson insisted that the relationship between the two nations need to be improved.

“There is a low level of trust between our two countries. The world’s two foremost nuclear powers cannot have this kind of relationship,” Tillerson said.

Tensions have increased following last week’s U.S. missile strike on a Syrian airbase controlled by the Assad government in retaliation for a deadly chemical weapons attack.

Tillerson met privately with Putin at the Kremlin for almost two hours prior to the press conference with Lavrov.
