Town’s 400 residents stood up and drove away huge chicken plant – they understand if you don’t build it, they won’t come.
The little community of Nickerson, Nebraska fought back – and won – when economic developers tried to bring in a chicken processing plant, claiming it would provide 1,100 jobs. Jobs for who? This is a farming community, their community is small, and they want to keep it that way. They didn’t want 1,100 people moving into their town, fearing that the plant would only bring in illegal immigrants and Somalian Muslims to work there, as has happened in other meat processing plants in Nebraska and other states.
The people of Nickerson didn’t want the truck traffic or the stench, they didn’t want the local school overwhelmed with immigrant children, and most of all, they didn’t want their way of life and the town’s character changed forever.
The chicken processing plant got the message, and took their jobs and money elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the people of Nickerson are organizing to help the next town that’s targeted.
