Amid the racial tensions surrounding the preservation of Confederate monuments, and tributes to figures who owned slaves, many have spoken about the famous American symbol, Mt. Rushmore.
While some may want to strip the monument of the faces of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington because they owned slaves, one group is looking to replace Teddy Roosevelt with Ronald Reagan.
Tax reform advocate and major DC lobbyist Grover Norquist, leader of the Reagan Legacy Project, said that Roosevelt was a statist and a progressive Republican who didn’t represent the views of today’s Republicans.
“My preference is to replace Teddy Roosevelt because he was a statist and a progressive Republican as opposed to a Reagan Republican. Does he [Ronald Reagan] deserve the kind of status that a Jefferson and a Washington have? The answer is yes, he does,” said Norquist.
Norquist angered liberals in the past when he convinced Congress to change the name of Washington National Airport to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. And the Reagan Legacy Project didn’t stop there. They’re continuing to fight to rename parks, post offices, roads, and other locations after former President Reagan, with Mt. Rushmore being the grand prize.
If Reagan does get on Mt. Rushmore, liberals may force a compromise and demand Obama’s face replace one of the slave-owning presidents, a tactic DML has suggested may be a way to quell the left’s anger at Confederate monuments.
Bishop James Dukes, the pastor of the Liberation Christian Center, has called for the eradication Washington’s name from all monuments.
“Slave owners do not deserve the honor of our children playing in parks named after them. There is no way a Native American community would allow a General Custer park or a Jewish community allow a Gestapo park in their community,” Dukes declared.
