Former President Barack Obama didn’t take much action when he found out about Russian hacking attempts during the 2016 election, supposedly because he didn’t want to make it look like it was “rigged” against Donald Trump, according to Rep. Adam Schiff, the top-ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee in a televised interview with CNN on Sunday.
“I think the administration needed to call out Russia earlier, needed to act to deter and punish Russia earlier, and that was a very serious mistake,” said Schiff, of California, suggesting that President Barack Obama didn’t want to look like like he was “trying to tip the scales for Hillary Clinton,” so he stayed relatively quiet about the issue during the election.
Referring to a time when Trump jokingly called on the Russians to find Clinton’s “lost” emails, Schiff claimed that the President “openly egged on the Russians and is in no position to complain here.”
In response to new reports the Obama knew about the Russian meddling, President Trump called him out on Sunday for doing “nothing” about the interference.
“I just heard today for the first time that (former President) Obama knew about Russia a long time before the election, and he did nothing about it,” said Trump on “Fox & Friends Weekend.” “The CIA gave him information on Russia a long time before the election. … If he had the information, why didn’t he do something about it?”
Trump pointed out the media has been downplaying the facts, while spewing any and every allegation, true or false, that his transition team colluded with Russia to throw the 2016 race in his favor.
A report from the Washington Post was published on Friday admitting that the Obama administration held back on revealing the facts about information it was given about Russia’s interference in the election.
