Fans who “feel the need for speed” can celebrate – “Top Gun” is finally getting a much anticipated sequel.
Considered the movie that launched A-lister Tom Cruise to superstardom, the much-admired action film “Top Gun” just celebrated the 31st anniversary of it’s release.
Wednesday, Cruise himself told reporters in Australia that filming of “Top Gun 2” is “definitely happening,” and will begin within the next year.
Although Cruise had dropped hints about a potential sequel, this is the first time a definitive declaration had been made.
Cruise will be reprising his role as “Maverick,” a fighter pilot who charmed audiences when Cruise was in his 20’s. Now, at age 54, audiences will find out if Maverick is still the reckless rebel from the first film, or if he’s a different person with 30 years behind him.
Following the announcement, Cruis’s costar from the film, Val Kilmer, tweeted his willingness to join the cast.
Kilmer captioned his selfie, “I’m ready Tom- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!” He’s pictured wearing a t-shirt with an image of “Iceman,” the iconic character he played in the original film.
