Sen. Richard Durbin’s, (D-Ill.) offices have been flooded with phone calls pleading for him to stop blocking pro-Israel initiatives.

The Washington Free Beacon reported that both of Durbin’s offices in Washington, D.C. and Chicago received over 1,000 calls within four hours. The non-stop phone calls reached such a high volume that his office staff shut off the phones for a time.

The phone calls started on Wednesday afternoon and have continued into Thursday.

Reportedly, the leader of the massive phone call protest was the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), who launched the calls in an effort to urge Durbin to stop holding up a key congressional initiative to rebuke the U.N. following its recent action against Israel.

The U.S. House of Representative voted to approve a similar measure, but Dick Durbin and other Democratic senators are holding up a resolution condemning last month’s U.N. Security Council condemnation of Israel’s settlements.

Sen. Tom Udall, (D-N.M)  told reporters that the Senate resolution’s language is objectionable because it does not recognize that settlements are an obstruction to peace. He added that should Durbin release his hold, then he would in turn place his own hold.

While individual senators are allowed to place a hold on most types of legislation, it would require 60 senators to override a hold, according to one report.

The Republican Jewish Coalition sent an email on Wednesday asking supporters across the U.S. to call Durbin’s offices and insist that he allow the pro-Israel measure to move forward and to “stop playing games with Israel’s security.”

The email also stated that “most Americans were infuriated by this attack on Israel—and by the betrayal of the lame-duck Obama administration, which colluded with Israel’s enemies to help the resolution pass.”

A spokesman for RJC, Fred Brown, said the pro-Israel support among Americans is further evidence for Congress to follow suit and condemn the U.N.

Brown gave this statement:

“In the face of an overwhelming desire to stand with Israel against the disgraceful actions of the United Nations and the Obama administration, Senator Durbin has chosen to play politics with the security of our closest ally, Israel.”

He added,“The American people made it clear last November that they are tired of these partisan games, and despite the senator’s best efforts, they will not be ignored.”

Durbin’s congressional office has reportedly not commented on the incident.
