Transgender Doll To Debut at Toy Fair (see doll)

A New York doll maker announced on Friday plans to manufacture the first transgender doll.

The Associated Press reports that the doll is based on Jazz Jennings, transgender teen star of  TLC’s hit documentary series “I am Jazz.”

The New York-based toy company plans to debut the doll at the New York Toy Fair next week and plans to have the doll available for purchase in July.

The company said it will first conduct a market test to measure demand for the “Jazz” doll.  The test will be limited to 25 to 50 stores, plus the company’s website.

Depending on how well the doll is received, the toy maker is considering making it available to the mass market.

A spokesperson for Tonner Doll said the 18-inch doll is expected to sell for $89.99 and is made from a “genderless” plastic mold. It is being marketed to kids aged 8 years and older.

The release of the transgender doll comes 40 years after “Gay Bob” doll made its debut, which was thought to be the first doll based on a gay character, says the report.

Tonner_Doll_Jazz_JenningsCompany founder and “Jazz” doll designer, Robert Tonner, told reporters: “Jazz stands for everything I respect from a human nature point of view — she’s incredibly brave, intelligent, warm-hearted and creative.”

Before rising to fame on the TLC reality program, Jennings appeared at age 6 on a 20/20 special back in 2007. Her parents talked told Barbara Walters that Jazz had identified as female since she could talk.
Jennings is the youngest person to be recognized in The Advocate Magazine’s “Top Forty Under 40”  list and was named one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential Teens for 2014 and 2015, reports CBS News. She also co-wrote a children’s picture book titled “I Am Jazz” and her memoir, “Being Jazz: My Life as a [Transgender] Teen,” which was released this past summer.
