A 100 foot Eucalyptus tree fell on top of a wedding party as they posed for pictures in a California park, trapping several guests beneath it.

According to fire officials, the large wedding group decided to pose for a group shot under the tree in Penn Park, Whittier, California, when the tree just toppled over, landed on several of the guests, and trapped many of them underneath.

Los Angeles County firefighters responded at 4:45 pm and began the process of freeing many of the still trapped guests using chain saws to cut away branches and pull the six guests out from under the tree.

An injured elderly woman died on the way to the hospital and a 4-year-old girl who suffered head trauma was in critical condition. Five other guests had minor injuries.

Search dogs were brought in to search for any victims that may have not been discovered but by Saturday evening the scene was cleared.

Fire officials aren’t sure why the 100-year-old tree fell but did say there were heavy rains the night before. Some officials are also blaming California’s long drought on possibly weakening the trees roots.

A team of arborists will determine why the Eucalyptus fell.
