One benefit Iran got out the Obama administration’s nuclear agreement was permission to purchase brand new commercial aircraft from manufacturers in the United States, but now that President Trump has refused to certify Iran as in compliance with the agreement, agreements they made with Boeing may be cancelled as well.
During the Obama administration, following Obama’s nuclear agreement with Iran, Boeing had made a deal $16.6 billion deal with Iran to provide 80 passenger planes to Iran Air.
Additionally, Boeing announced in April that it had signed a new $3 billion contract with Iran’s Aseman Airlines to supply them with 30 new commercial aircraft, with deliveries to start in 2022.
Boeing claimed the deal would create or sustain about 18,000 jobs in the United States, and promised that “Boeing continues to follow the lead of the U.S. government with regards to working with Iran’s airlines, and any and all contracts with Iran’s airlines are contingent upon U.S. government approval.”
Congress is now reportedly pressuring the Trump administration to kill the agreement between Boeing and Iran, over concerns that the planes will actually be used to transfer militant fighters. The Washington Free Beacon reported that Iran Air was recently caught using its commercial planes to fly Iranian militants to terror hotspots in the region.
The Free Beacon first disclosed in August that Congress has been investigating new evidence that Iran Air has been ferrying militants to Syria and other regional hotspots in violation of international laws. It is likely that the Obama administration withheld information about this behavior in order to help promote the nuclear agreement.
There is mounting concern in the Trump administration and Congress that Iran would use a fleet of new Boeing planes to boost its regional intervention in hotspots such as Syria, where Iranian-backed militants have repeatedly attacked American coalition forces.
