Approximately 4 million illegal aliens in the United States just had their hopes dashed for getting amnesty thanks to a move by the Trump administration on Thursday.
The Department of Homeland Security released a memo Thursday, June 15, announcing that DHS Secretary John Kelly has signed an order rescinding DAPA, the program that would have given amnesty to illegal alien parents of children who are U.S. citizens or “lawful permanent residents.”
Obama had announced the DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents) plan in 2014, but it had never yet been implemented. It would have awarded work permits to an estimated 4 million parents of “anchor babies.”
A Texas judge had blocked the Obama signed order, and in June 2016 the Supreme Court backed up the judge’s decision.
In the memo released Thursday by DHS, it stated:
On June 15, Department of Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly, after consulting with the Attorney General, signed a memorandum rescinding the November 20, 2014 memorandum that created the program known as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (“DAPA”) because there is no credible path forward to litigate the currently enjoined policy.
The memo did state, however, that “The June 15, 2012 memorandum that created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will remain in effect.”
Since Obama implemented DACA, approximately 765,000 illegal alien youth have been given Social Security cards and work permits, and over 17,000 new DACA applicants have been approved for the program since President Trump was inaugurated.
DAPA included extensions to DACA, which gave amnesty to additional young illegal aliens, and extended the work permits from two years to three years. Those extensions are cancelled now that DHS has rescinded DAPA .
