Trump appointing judges faster than Obama

The Trump administration is moving faster to fill vacant judicial slots than either of the past two administrations, as a 5th Trump nominee for a federal judge was approved this week.

In a 66-31 vote, Alabama lawyer Kevin Christopher Newsom was just confirmed to a seat on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this week. Joining the GOP were 16 Democrats who voted yes. The 11th Circuit covers the states of Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Last month, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Newsom in a landslide 18-2 vote. Newsom, a graduate of Harvard Law School, is a former Alabama solicitor general, and has also had experience in private law work.

Over two dozen additional Trump nominees are waiting to be confirmed. Democrats deny they are slowing down the process, saying they are simply vetting the federal court candidates, but confirmations are still outpacing the previous administrations.

In comparison, former President Obama had no confirmed judges in his first six months, and only three confirmed nominees by November 2009.

By August of his first year in office, former President George W. Bush had just one circuit judge and two district judges confirmed.

There are approximately 137 vacancies still needing to be filled in the federal court, while Trump has nominated a total of 28 so far, which is several more than Obama had at the same point in time.

There are seven circuit court nominees and 17 district court nominees still pending in the Senate.

White House spokesperson Kelly Love said, “The Trump administration has moved faster on filling judicial vacancies compared to the past administrations, thanks to its commitment to working with and extensively consulting all senators, regardless of political affiliation, to select high-caliber nominees.”
