The Professional Golf Association (PGA) named President Trump honorary chairman of the biennial President’s Cup.

Possessing a well-documented love for golf, Trump will be the 11th world leader to serve as the tournament’s chair.

The President’s Cup was started by the PGA Tour in an effort to create a tradition of competition that rivals that of the Ryder Cup, which pits the United States against Europe, and includes a burgeoning list of elite golfers not from the United States or Europe.

Thus, in 1994, the President’s Cup was created when a team of American golfers squared off against a team of international golfers, represented mostly by South Africans, Australians, and Japanese. After the cancellation of the 2001 Ryder Cup due to the events of 9/11, the tournament was pushed back a year; therefore, the President’s Cup now falls on the odd years.

There is no monetary prize for winning the President’s Cup; instead, proceeds are donated to charities nominated by the players, captains, and captains’ assistants. Since its conception, the President’s Cup has raised over $32 million for charities globally.

All three of Trump’s predecessors, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton served as the Cup’s honorary chairs at some point in their tenures. Obama was the chair in 2013. Trump told that he is honored to be named the chair and that “this one will be the best one.”

Trump has worked in tandem with the PGA and the United States Golf Association (USGA) regularly, as two of his courses hosted tournaments earlier this year. The Senior PGA Championship was held at his Potomac Falls course in Virginia and the U.S. Women’s Open was held at his course in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The President’s Cup takes place Sep. 28-Oct. 1. Steve Stricker will play as captain to the American team and Nick Pearce to the international team.
