In a leaked clip from an exclusive interview with NBC’s Lester Holt on Thursday, President Trump told Holt that it wasn’t just the recommendation from the Justice Department officials that prompted him to fire FBI Director James Comey.
“I was going to fire regardless of the recommendation,” the president stated. He said it was “my decision,” and added, “There’s no good time to do it.”
“He’s a showboat, he’s a grandstander,” Trump said of Comey. “The FBI has been in turmoil,” he said.
Holt questioned Trump about his comment in the termination letter, when Trump said, “I greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate occasions that I am not under investigation.”
Trump said at an arranged dinner with Comey, Comey told him he was not under investigation.
