It is being reported that the Trump administration has cut funding to the United Nation’s Population Fund (UNFPA) — a U.N. women’s health agency — because it openly supports a Chinese program that uses forced abortions.
According to a recent Associated Press report, the agency will lose $32.5 million in the 2017 budget.
The agency offers aid to 150 different countries and the Trump administration has said it will offer the funds to programs at the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The administration said it does not want any of its funds to go toward China’s “two-child policy,” which forces abortions on women.
In response, the UNFPA released a statement saying that it is disappointed in the decision and called the agency “pro-human rights.”
“UNFPA refutes this claim, as all of its work promotes the human rights of individuals and couples to make their own decisions, free of coercion or discrimination.”
Reportedly, this is not the first time a Republican administration has cut funding to the UNFPA. Typically, the funding is restored when a Democratic president takes office.
