Barack Obama’s private bike share, which he had installed inside the White House security perimeter, has been removed by the Trump administration, a move that has some upset.
Capital Bikeshare is metro D.C.’s sharing service which utilizes 3,700 bikes and 440 stations across five jurisdictions: Washington, D.C.; Arlington, Va.; Alexandria, Va.; Montgomery, Md., and Fairfax County, Va., according to its website.
The service was designed for quick rides and one-way trips to commute to work, school, run errands and get to engagements. To become a member, citizens can buy a pass, insert their bike key into a dock, and unlock a bike.
Former President Barrack Hussein Obama had an exclusive nine-slot Capital Bikeshare dock erected inside the White House’s security perimeter. Located at 17th Street and State Place, the station was visible but wasn’t included on any system map. Capital Bikeshare’s smallest station was, essentially, as unofficial “secret” location.
Reportedly, the station was removed at the beginning of this week “at the Trump administration’s request.”
According to the Washington Free Beacon, “The Washingtonian mourned the loss” of the private bike share, but the Beacon notes that it was a station that most subscribers of the Washingtonian couldn’t even use.
The Beacon writes:
“Washingtonian mourned the loss of the exclusive Capital Bikeshare the former president erected in 2010, which subscribers could not use.
“Washingtonian praised Obama for his ‘favorable record with the cycling community,’ for spending millions of dollars through the stimulus package on ‘bike infrastructure,’ and adding bike lanes in the nation’s capital.”
Obama’s Department of Transportation reportedly spent millions on bicycling projects and studies, such as one study to determine if “bicycle trains” could be used to fight obesity.
Apparently, the Washingtonian says bicyclists aren’t impressed with Trump after he made fun of failed presidential candidate and former secretary of state John Kerry. While in France, Kerry fell off a bike during negotiations over the Iran nuclear deal.
The incident, which occurred in 2015, happened the day after Kerry had a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, in Geneva. They were negotiating details surrounding the curbing of Tehran’s nuclear program.
Kerry was out riding his bike when he fell and broke his femur in an accident.
Never one to let an opportunity pass, Trump, who had recently announced his presidential candidacy, said, “I will stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. And we won’t be using a man like Secretary Kerry that has absolutely no concept of negotiation, who’s making a horrible and laughable deal, who’s just being tapped along as they make weapons right now, and then goes into a bicycle race at 72 years old and falls and breaks his leg. I won’t be doing that. And I promise I will never be in a bicycle race, that I can tell you.”
Apparently, the “biking community” took offense, though it is unclear if they were in support of Kerry, if they were unhappy at the suggestion that people shouldn’t be riding a bike at 72, or if they just wanted the president to endorse their recreational activity by biking around the Capitol himself.
