President Trump likes to be unpredictable. That said, his unpredictability came in like a tsunami last night when he used his Twitter account to endorse Sen. Strange in the special primary to be held in Alabama on Aug 15.
In the tweet, Trump writes: “Senator Luther Strange has done a great job representing the people of the Great State of Alabama. He has my complete and total endorsement!”
Trump’s endorsement of Strange is not only strange, it’s downright bizarre as it goes against the idea of “draining the swamp.”
By endorsing Strange, he takes a bat to the head of Rep. Mo Brooks, who is running against the senator.
Strange has the backing of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and McConnell’s allies, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which has angered other candidates by treating Strange as the incumbent.
Brooks, on the other hand, is a conservative lawmaker endorsed by conservatives like Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, and Sean Hannity. I too like Brooks – and always have. He is dead against illegal immigration.
According to Brook’s website: “Congressman Brooks consistently receives the highest rating in Congress from NumbersUSA on border security issues for his fight to stop illegal immigration. This year, he introduced H.R. 3151, the Arrest Statistics Reporting Act, to make illegal alien crime data public, so lawmakers are better informed and empowered to make the decisions needed to protect American lives. Further, Brooks introduced the ICE Agent Support Act, which would provide resources and incentives for the enforcement of immigration laws. He also introduced the American Jobs First Act, which would reform the foreign-worker visa program (H-1B visa program), a broken system which exacerbates the country’s labor shortage and depresses wages by bringing in foreign workers to compete with American workers. Both the ICE Agent Support Act and the American Jobs First Act are companion legislation introduced in the Senate by Senators Jeff Sessions and Ted Cruz.”
President Trump has made a big mistake with his endorsement, and this will come back to haunt him later, I believe.
In reaction to Trump’s endorsement of Strange, Brooks put out a press release this morning.
Statement from Congressman Mo Brooks on President Trump’s Endorsement
Huntsville, AL- Congressman Mo Brooks made the following statement on President Trump’s endorsement in the Alabama Special Election Primary:
“I respect President Trump, but I am baffled and disappointed Mitch McConnell and the Swamp somehow misled the President into endorsing Luther Strange.
“Perhaps the President is unaware that Luther Strange corruptly and unethically held a criminal investigation over the head of disgraced Governor Bentley to obtain the senate appointment.
“Perhaps President Trump is unaware that Luther Strange wants to keep the Senate’s 60% rule that empowers Chuck Schumer and the Democrats to kill the entire conservative, Republican, and President Trump legislative agendas.
“Perhaps President Trump is unaware then- Attorney General Luther Strange received $50,000 from a heavy polluter as a reward for Luther Strange sending two letters to the EPA that blocked EPA efforts to force the polluter to pay cleanup costs at a heavily polluted Birmingham Superfund site that endangers the health of Alabama children and citizens.
“The President has bigger things going on than a campaign, that’s for sure.
“In any event, while Mitch McConnell and the Swamp managed to mislead the President last night, I still support the America First Agenda, and all the polls show we have momentum.
“We believe our message will win out over the Swamp and Lyin’ Luther.
“We continue the fight for America’s future. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Forward we march.”
