According to a New York Times investigation, American cyberwarriors are attempting to sabotage North Korea’s missile program.
After coming to the conclusion that 60 years of US efforts to find a way to shoot down incoming missiles had fallen flat, in 2014 President Barack Obama secretly ordered the Pentagon to increase its electronic strikes. Shortly thereafter, North Korean missiles began exploding and going off course or crashing into the ocean, reports the NY Times.
The paper states that while most of North Korea’s missile failures were caused by U.S. interference, some experts believe it is very likely that many of the failures resulted from North Korean incompetence, as well.
Advocates for the program believe that targeted strikes have given American anti-missile defenses a new edge, delaying North Korea in its ability to threaten America with nuclear weapons by several years.
The North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-un, may have become shaken by this U.S.-led effort, as he is reported to have ordered an investigation into whether the United States was sabotaging his country’s missiles program last fall.
While Kim has recently claimed that North Korea is in the final stage of preparation in launching an intercontinental missile that could reach much of the world, it is unclear if he is bluffing or not.
Obama’s program is now in the hands of President Trump. However, according to a senior official at the White House, President Trump and his administration are looking at pre-emptive military strike options.
