Donald Trump Jr. opened himself up to intense criticism by tweeting out a picture of his adorable daughter, Chloe, on Halloween, writing, “I’m going to take half of Chloe’s candy tonight & give it to some kid who sat at home. It’s never to (sic) early to teach her about socialism.”
The last time Trump Jr. tweeted out a candy-related metaphor was when he showed a bowl full of Skittles and compared them to refugees, where three of the Skittles were said to be poison. The first son faced intense backlash on social media for putting out a message about the dangers of terrorists hidden within the refugee population that may be received differently in the wake of Tuesday’s terrorist attack.
It was revealed on Wednesday that alleged attacker Sayfullo Saipov came to the U.S. in 2010 through a program called the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, compliments of the Obama administration.
Democrats are still blindly defending the program, however, claiming there are no effective ways to vet against the type of terror witnessed yesterday, from an immigration standpoint.
Families and friends of the eight people killed and 11 injured will forever be affected by his actions, however.
And as with the Skittles tweet, Trump Jr.’s Halloween candy message was met with plenty of skepticism and derision. Critics, such as Washington Post writer Aaron Blake defended socialism, writing on Tuesday that Trump’s “lesson” is “a gross oversimplification.”
“Socialism is defined by the government controlling the means of production and the distribution of goods and services — not simply by high taxes and the rich sharing their wealth with the poor. In fact, our own system, via the graduated income tax, already leads to the wealthy subsidizing the poor through higher income taxes — and taxes in general,” he wrote, adding, “Someone in the highest income bracket already pays 39.6 percent of their income in federal taxes — if you are counting candy collected as “income” — and in fact, the marginal tax rate for high earners in Trump’s home state of New York is already around 50 percent. So that’s actually about the correct amount of candy for Trump to confiscate, even in our capitalist country.”
