On Wednesday afternoon many media outlets reported that President Trump abruptly left the Oval Office with his daughter Ivanka to board Marine One.
It turns out he was headed off to pay his respects to Chief Petty Officer William “Ryan” Owens.
The president and Ivanka headed for the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to help console Owens’ family upon the arrival of his remains. Owens was killed early Sunday in Yemen during a raid on Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
During the raid on the al-Qaeda facility, Owens was shot and killed in the operation that Trump had authorized over the weekend. This is the first military death under the Trump administration. Four other SEALs were injured in the raid, but are reportedly in stable condition.
In retrospect, fourteen al-Qaeda soldiers were killed in the raid.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer released an official statement on Owens’ death:
“The president offered his sincerest condolences to Officer Owens’ wife, his father and their three children. Chief Owens was on his 12th deployment, from what I understand. We could never repay the debt of gratitude we owe him, the freedom he fought for, and the sacrifice he made as well as the other members of his unit injured in this operation.”
