Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price stands accused of chartering private planes, funded by taxpayers, for government business. On Wednesday, President Donald J. Trump was asked if he might fire Price, to which the president replied, “We’ll see.”
The House Oversight Committee made requests on Wednesday, seeking information about certain Cabinet officials’ use of non-commercial aircraft for official and personal travel, as they to continue their investigation into the practice.
Speaking to reporters, the president said he isn’t happy about the behavior, in which several of his Cabinet members have engaged.
“I was looking into it and I will look into it. I will tell you personally, I’m not happy about it,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “I am not happy about it. I’m going to look at it. I let him know it.”
According to reports by aides, the president and Price talked during a Wednesday morning call.
The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) inspector general is also reportedly investigating Price’s decision to charter private planes for official business instead of using a commercial means of travel, which would have saved taxpayers thousands.
Politico reported that Secretary Price has traveled on charter flights at least 24 times since May, citing a review of HHS documents and people familiar with his travel behavior.
Asked if he thinks Price is in trouble,” President Trump said the Senate needed to be consulted. Another question lobbed at him, regarding if he has confidence in Price, was ignored.
Later, just before he ended the question-and-answer session with the press, President Trump was asked about Price’s position, and if he was considering dismissal. Over his shoulder, the president only answered, “We’ll see.”
