President-elect Donald Trump has chosen to nominate Congressman Tom Price, R-Ga., to head the Department of Health and Human Services.
In a statement early Tuesday morning, Trump called Price “exceptionally qualified to shepherd our commitment to repeal and replace Obamacare and bring affordable and accessible healthcare to every American.”
Price is a six-term congressman and an orthopedic surgeon who has been strongly been opposed to the Affordable Care Act and currently serves as chairman of the House Budget Committee.
Ever since Obamacare was passed in 2009, Price has been pushing for passage of his “Empowering Patients First” Act, which seeks to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act by providing tax credits to purchase private health insurance based on age instead of income.
In 2011, a year after Obamacare was signed into law, Price said “The purpose of health reform should be to advance accessibility, affordability, quality, responsiveness, and innovation,” and that “None of these are improved” by the Affordable Care Act.
Price has even shown support for Ryan’s health care plan, titled “A Better Way.”
“It’s time for a better way to put patients, families, and doctors back in charge of medical decisions,” Price said in October. “President Obama and Democrats must put their pride and politics aside so that we can start over with a Better Way—a step-by-step plan to give every American access to quality, affordable health care.”
Sen. David Perdue R-Ga., praised Price’s selection Monday evening.
“Tom is a fellow Georgian who understands that we need to stop Washington’s takeover of our health care system,” he said. “As a doctor, he is seen as a leading voice on health care policy and has a common-sense plan to replace Obamacare that will lower costs and put patients in charge of their health care choices.”
“I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with Tom, and there is no doubt in my mind that he will do a fantastic job improving our nation’s health care system and the lives of all Americans.”
Trump is expected to formally nominate price for the position as early as Tuesday morning.
