All major news outlets are reporting that President-elect Donald J. Trump has chosen South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Nikki Haley endorsed Senator Marco Rubio for president, and was a sharp critic of Trump throughout much of his campaign. If confirmed by the Senate, she would become the first female – and first non-white – Cabinet-level official in the Trump administration.
She’s the second Asian-American to serve as U.S. governor.
Haley accepted Trump’s offer shortly after the announcement was made that the President-elect offered her the position on Wednesday morning.
The selection comes as a surprise to many in DC because after Rubio dropped out of the presidential race, Haley turned her support to Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
Trump’s selection of Haley indicates he is willing to overlook his critics of the past in order to pick the best person for the job.
