Trump refuses to sign Paris climate agreement

President Donald Trump has refused to sign the Paris climate agreement, making the United States the only country within the Group of 7 (G7) to do so. However, this does not come as a surprise, as Trump vowed to opt out of the agreement during his campaign.

In the Paris agreement, the United States, along with other United Nations members, committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming. Reportedly, President Barack Obama committed the United States to cutting emissions 26 to 28 percent by 2025.

According to The Daily Caller, Secretary of Energy Rick Perry recently said that the United States “is in the process of reviewing many of its policies, and reserves its position on this issue, which will be communicated at a future date.”

Other G7 members “reaffirmed their commitment towards the implementation of the Paris Agreement to effectively limit the increase in global temperature well below 2°C above [the] pre-industrial level,” Italy’s industry and energy minister Carlo Calenda said.

Ivanka Trump, White House aide Jared Kushner, and Sec. of State Rex Tillerson all support the agreement, while White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt oppose it.

In addition to high efficiency, low emission coal, and natural gas, Rick Perry said, “Innovation is also a top priority for the Trump administration.” Perry added, “We are committed to developing, deploying, and commercializing breakthrough technologies and developing the necessary policies that will help renewables become competitive with traditional sources of energy.”

Although most GOP leaders are against the agreement, some Republicans argue it could create more jobs in the energy industry, as well as enable more subsidies for clean coal technologies.
