Rosa Maria Ortega, a citizen of Mexico, was sentenced to 8 years in prison for willfully casting illegal ballots over a 10-year period.
Wrongfully citing U.S. citizenship in Dallas County, Ortega was charged and sentenced after confessing her voter registration was false.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton wrote in a statement that Ortega’s conviction shows “how serious” his state is in ensuring the democratic process remains intact.
“The outcome sends a message that violators of the state’s election law will be prosecuted to the fullest,” Paxton said. “Safeguarding the integrity of our elections is essential to preserving our democracy.”
Prior to Ortega’s sentencing, prosecutors revealed that the 37 year-old Mexican woman illegally voted on five occasions between 2004 and 2014, while also attempting to vote elsewhere in Tarrant County.
President Trump has made numerous statements in the past few months about voter fraud in the United States; the president claims illegal aliens are casting ballots in national and local elections. The liberal media has attacked him constantly over his accusations, often stating he has no proof of the wrong doing. This case supports the president’s concerns.
