President Trump is making moves to back up his “calm before the storm” statement on North Korea, sending a second nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, filled with 7,500 marines, to the Middle East.
The Roosevelt will focus on maritime security operations in the Pacific and Middle East, the US military announced. But South Korean media is claiming the ship has been sent to boost US defense on the Korean peninsula.
The aircraft carrier makes its way to the far east following rumors North Korea is preparing to fire multiple short-range rockets during the opening of the Chinese Communist Party’s twice-a-decade congress on Oct. 18th.
The Roosevelt, a Nimitz class aircraft carrier, joins the USS Ronald Reagan in the region, both equipped with nuclear capabilities. Admiral Steve Koehler, a strike group commander on the ship, released a statement noting the ship carries 7,500 marines “ready as a warfighting force.”
“The US Navy carrier strike group is the most versatile, capable force at sea,” he said in a statement before the ship’s launch.
“After nearly a year of training and integration exercises, the entire team is ready as a warfighting force and ready to carry out the nation’s tasking.”
A full map of US naval forces across the globe can be viewed at Zero Hedge.
The ships mark the foundation of a legitimate US force in the region that offers a large enough threat to contain North Korea.
Before a dinner with military advisers last week, President Trump hinted something was in the works:
“You guys know what this represents? Maybe it’s the calm before the storm,” he said. “It could be the calm… before… the storm.”
A reporter quickly asked what the storm might be: “Is it Iran, ISIS, what’s the storm?” to which the president replied, “You’ll find out.”
TRUMP: “Maybe it’s the calm before the storm.”
