On Tuesday, President Trump held a meeting with some of the top executives from drug companies across the country to begin negotiations on lowering medicine prices.

One of Trump’s stances during the campaign trail had been to lower the current prices of expensive drugs, which he deemed “astronomical.”

At the White House, Trump reportedly told the pharmaceutical elitists: “You folks have done a tremendous job but we have to get prices down.”

Trump also tailored the conversation with executives to investing in jobs in the U.S., to conducting faster approval periods over drug regulations within the FDA, and to negotiate pricey requirements under Medicare.

In the meeting, Trump proclaimed:

“We’re going to be cutting regulation at a level nobody’s ever seen before. You can’t get approval for the plant, and then you can’t get approval to make the drug, other than that you’re doing fantastic. U.S. drug companies have produced extraordinary results for our country, but the pricing has been astronomical for our country.”

On Medicare, Trump stated the following:

“I’ll oppose anything that makes it harder for smaller, younger companies to take the risk of bringing their product to a vibrantly competitive market. That includes price-fixing by the biggest dog in the market, Medicare, which is what’s happening. But we can increase competition and bidding wars, big time.”

Top leaders from the pharmaceutical business world that were present at the meeting include executives from Merck, Johnson & Johnson, Celgene, Amgen, Eli Lilly, and the PhRMA trade group, as well as House Energy and Commerce Chairman, Greg Walden.
