Citizens of France took to the polls on Sunday in the first round of a presidential election said to be a litmus test of just how influential the waves of populism and nationalism in Europe have become.
All eyes are on far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, who is said to be the French equivalent of President Donald Trump, politically. With another terrorist attack taking place in Paris this week, the stakes are even higher. Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron were leading the race as polls opened.
President Trump is watching the event unfold along with the rest of the world. He tweeted on Sunday morning: “Very interesting election currently taking place in France.”
