Trump Tweet: NFL needs to take action

The NFL announced today that it will not change the rules to require athletes to stand during the national anthem, and President Donald J. Trump sent out a Wednesday evening tweet bemoaning the news.

Early on Wednesday, the president reported via Twitter: “The NFL has decided that it will not force players to stand for the playing of our National Anthem. Total disrespect for our great country!”

Later in the day, he tweeted directly to the NFL, writing: “NFL: Too much talk, not enough action. Stand for the National Anthem.”

During a press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “Again, we believe our players should stand for the national anthem,” but emphasized he would not set a rule to make them do so.

Goodell also said, “We have about six or seven players that are involved with this protest at this point.”

It’s unclear if that means only a half-dozen players plan to keep protesting, because “more than 200 NFL players defiantly took a knee during the national anthem” on one Sunday alone in September, according to The New York Post.
